How about that Royal Wedding Sermon????
Last weekend, at the Royal Wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, our Presiding Bishop and Primate of the Episcopal Church, The Most Reverend Michael B. Curry, stunned a worldwide audience of over one billion people with a riveting and exhilarating sermon on love.
The transformational power of love was wonderfully and powerfully explained by a leader with a contagious love for Jesus and for the Church. For sixteen minutes Bishop Curry was a pastor and an advocate to the whole world and to the entire human race. In those fleeting moments, he became a profound voice speaking for people of hunger; the disenfranchised; victims of slavery and for all those who resist injustice and oppression.
The exciting question that we Episcopalians now get to ponder is: “How can we harness this momentum and further Bishops Curry’s call to ‘capture the energy of love’?” At our recent Clergy Conference, just mere days before the royal wedding, I alerted the clergy in attendance to be prepared for an influx of public inquiry as a result of Bishop Curry’s sermon. Knowing the Presiding Bishop personally, and having had the privilege of hearing him preach on many occasions, I was certain his sermon would be powerful. However, as prepared as I was, little did I realize that his sermon would create such an impact on the global stage.
My advice to all members of the Diocese of Easton (lay and clergy alike) is to share! Share the message of love that Bishop Curry spoke about, share his joyful visit to the Today show, share his light-hearted “appearance” on Saturday Night Live, and above all, share the “redemptive power of love” in every aspect of your being. Treat yourself kindly, show grace to your neighbor, and examine your words and actions with a careful eye towards love. We are the Episcopal Church, Bishop Curry is our spiritual leader, and we are working with our faithful brothers and sisters to “make of this old world, a new world”.
Finally, I’d like to remind everyone to share that Presiding Bishop Curry will be the Celebrant and Preacher for us on Sunday, March 3, 2019 at 11:00am at the Hyatt Regency in Cambridge Maryland for the closing Eucharist of our Sesquicentennial Celebration. We were wise and blessed to get on his calendar before the Royal Wedding. Please tell your family and friends that they will have a rare opportunity to hear another amazing Bishop Curry sermon in person, here on the Eastern Shore.
