Our first diocesan-wide event to celebrate our Sesquicentennial will be held Saturday, May 5, 2018 at the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad National Historical Park in Church Creek, Maryland. This event is linked to the celebration theme of “Reconciliation.” We will reflect upon the ways in which we have harmed our neighbors, our environment and ourselves by things we have done and left undone. We hope that you will join us!
Because parking is limited at the park, we request that you to come to Cambridge South Dorchester High School (CSDHS), located at 2475 Cambridge Beltway, Cambridge, MD 21613, and park in the stadium lot where shuttle buses will take you, for no charge, to the site. We will have a pop-up tent located at the spot where the shuttle buses will be picking us up and dropping us off. In order to try to transport people in the most efficient manner, we are asking that individuals from the Southern Convocation plan to arrive at the parking lot between 8:45-9:15 a.m., individuals from the Middle Convocation plan to arrive at the parking lot between 9:30-10:00 a.m. and individuals from the Northern Convocation plan to arrive at the parking lot between 10:15-10:45 a.m.. Transportation back to the high school will be provided until 3:30 pm. Individuals who need handicapped parking accommodations are asked to drive directly to the site, being mindful that there will be a limited number of parking spaces and the park will be open to the general public that day as well.
There will be group tours of the museum available at the following times:
Southern Convocation 9:15am – 10am
Middle Convocation 10am – 10:45am
Northern Convocation 2pm – 2:45pm
Hopefully, this will allow the maximum number of people to be able to have a tour, if desired. Everyone is welcome to tour the museum, visit the gift shop as well as to view the grounds on their own.
A Eucharist of Reconciliation will be offered, beginning at 11:00 a.m. in the outdoor pavilion adjacent to the museum. We will ask God, who is ever faithful and full of mercy, to aid us to amend our lives and set us on the right path. While there will be some seating provided, visitors are encouraged to bring a beach or lawn chair, if possible. Our preacher for this service will be the Rev. Nancy Dennis, the pastor of the historic St. Stephen’s AME Church in Unionville, MD.
After the service, a catered box lunch will be available, provided by Emily’s Produce of Cambridge. This will provide another opportunity for fellowship and fun. This will be the only food available on site and must be pre-ordered and pre-paid by 5:00 p.m., April 10, 2018. Please complete the attached registration form or use the form on-line through the diocesan website. You may mail in a check with your form or pay via credit card on line.
Following lunch, we will have a presentation from Coming to the Table. This is the group that made a presentation to the diocese at our Convention in February. This group will walk with us into some of the early stages of having a brave conversation together around the issues of slavery, racism and reconciliation. We want to encourage everyone to attend this presentation.
If you have any questions, please contact the diocesan office at 410-822-1919.
T-shirts will be available for purchase at the Cambridge South Dorchester High School before and after the event.
